Defenseman Olli Maatta signed a six-year contract extension, worth $4.08 million per season, with the Penguins on Friday. The contract includes a limited no-trade clause in the final two years, according to ESPN's Pierre LeBrun.

The Jets removed what would have been the most sought-after trade deadline target in re-signing defenseman Dustin Byfuglien to a five-year contract Monday.

The deal is worth an average of $7.6 million per season, the team announced.

Gary Bettman said his relationship with the union has never been better.

Perhaps that's why he is willing to stick around as NHL commissioner into the next decade.

Bettman signed a contract through 2022, he confirmed in an interview Sunday on the NHL Network before the All-Star Game. The deal was signed in September but was first reported and confirmed by sources Sunday.

"This happened many, many months ago," Bettman said.
